Preparing for the safety commission visit

The periodic visit to a hotel typically comes round every three years, under article GE 4 of the order of 25 June 1980. What is decided on the day is mostly prepared in the months before.

This guide is an aid to understanding, not legal advice. The law applicable to a given property depends on its classification, its occupancy and the prescriptions of the competent safety commission. Check the cited texts before acting on them.

What gets looked at first

The safety register and the verification reports. Not the elegance of your filing, but its existence: a date of last check, a report that proves it, and what happened to the findings raised last time.

  • The verification reports, in their original form
  • Previous findings and the evidence they were closed
  • Staff training certificates

An unclosed finding weighs more than a late check

A late check is fixed by booking it. A finding raised three years ago and still open says something else: that the report was filed without being read. It is the line an inspector re-reads first.

The pack you wish you had the night before

An index, the obligation list with its dates, and the source certificates appended. Assembled by hand it takes an afternoon and one is always missing. Assembled from a register that is already current, it takes a minute.

Common questions

Does the commission give notice?

The periodic visit is announced, which leaves time to gather the documents. Which is exactly why it is better to have nothing left to gather.

Be ready without preparing

The pack already exists if the register is kept.
